Asian
Fabric Quilts
by Irmgard Lee
July - August, 2008 |
| Irmgard
Lee and her husband moved from Williamsport PA to State College
in 1975. Irmgard worked for Atotech USA until 2002, after which
she decided to learn quilting. She took classes in 2003 and 2004,
and in that short time learned enough to create the art that is
exhibited at the Boalsburg Heritage Museum for July through August. |

Irmgard always loved fabrics with an Asian theme to them and discovered
that they were readily available in many quilt shops. One of her
favorite lines is the “Emperor II” collection, and
she decided to name her exhibit pieces using the regal name. She
found the fabrics in this line inspirational, creating either
simple wall hangings from panels or using the fabrics for borders.
She tends to sew traditional designs, but with a twist. Irmgard
uses both personally created designs as well as designs that are
publically available. She loves the creative process of planning
and sewing her quilts, with the goal of pleasing the eye. While
she machine-quilts smaller pieces, the larger ones are quilted
by two long arm quilt artists, Barbara Dann or Deb Kerr.

Almost
as remarkable as the brevity of her quilting career is the fact
that quilting was not known in her native Germany, reminding us
that it is an American art, one that is now seeing some success
in her native land.
